RODOPI ADVENDURUN 100 MILES (ROUT) REGULATIONS 2023
Καταχώρηση Πέμπτη, 25 Ιουνίου 2015 από ROUT
|
1.
GENERAL: "ROUT
CLASSIC 100 MILES" (ROUT) is
an ultra-endurance trail race with elements of adventure, which is
held every October at the Rodopi Mountain Range, in northern Greece.
Until 2012 the race was called "Rodopi Ultra Trail". Since
2013 until 2019 was called "Rodopi Advendurun 100 miles" and
since 2020 is named as "ROUT CLASSIC 100 MILES". The course is
174 kilometers (100+ miles) and
has +9000
meters elevation gain
(approx). The area where the race is held is one of the most
characteristic forests in Greece and is part of the Rodopi Mountain
Range National Park, an area of rare natural beauty and biodiversity
(habitat for bears, deer, wild goats, roe deer etc). The time
limit (cut-off) of the race is 44 hours. The race has the same
start and finish point, "Erymanthos" which is the Forest
Village in the area of Haidou, north of Stavroupoli, Xanthi. To
participate in ROUT essential abilities are required, like previous
ultra trail race experience.
2.
PHILOSOPHY: ROUT
perceives the meaning of ultra-endurance as an expression of
searching for the human limits through the contact with free and
uncontrolled nature, which forces its rules demanding respect,
awareness, courage, reserves of mental stamina and a lot of
experience.
Its basic parameters, define ROUT as a feat
experience, which tests the physical and mental stamina of its
athletes. For its organizers, ROUT is an "advendure race",
in regard to the aspect of the uncertainty of the race effort, due to
its big difficulty. The term advendure is defined as the
uncertainty of the outcome of an autonomous human effort in the open
nature.
In ROUT the external support of athletes is minimal, so
they must depend on themselves to face the subjective and objective
difficulties of the race. Crossing completely uninhabited areas
for 174 kilometers (100+ miles), they become one with nature, which
is a complicated and demanding procedure, but also is the very
essence of the event.
The philosophy of ROUT distills the
up-to-date experience in ultra trail races, emphasizing
in elements such as isolation, autonomy and independence, ingredient
elements of adventure, which ROUT is trying to inculcate to its
athletes.
3.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION: The
race is open to all those aged 20 years and above. Athletic
documentation is not required, since it cannot document one's ability
to take part in a test that surpasses the so-called athletic limits.
Interested parties submit an application and if they fulfill the
required criterion, having
completed at least one trail race longer than 50 miles (80
kilometers) during the 3 last calendar years (2021, 2022, 2023),
their participation in the race is approved. In any case, the
organization has the right to turn down an application despite the
fact that it may fulfill the typical criteria that have been set for
reasons that it is not obliged to explain to the interested party.
Athletes that have been disqualified from this or a different race in
the past for a serious ethical offense such as a heavy case of
deception or violent behavior, are not accepted.
4.
CATEGORIES:
a.
Men Μ
(20-49 years old)
b. Veteran men Μ50
(60+ years old)
c. Women W (20-49 years old)
d.
Veteran women W50 (50+ years old)
5.
PARTICIPATION CRITERIA: The
participation criterion for ROUT is the documented experience of an
athlete in similar races, which are characterized as "trail
races". The organization believes that the experience in
"asphalt road" long distance races does not provide the
ability to successfully face the difficulties of an ultra-trail race
like ROUT, with special requirements of familiarization with the
mountain surroundings in general and in particular with the
singularities of the field, the climate conditions, the absence of
frequent support and the psychological tension that are caused by
solitude and the unknown elements that differentiate the race largely
from a "road" race.
80
kilometers (50 miles) are set
as a minimum
distance for
a participation
criterion-race,
whether it is a completed finished 80K race. or a withdrawal after
the 100th
kilometer at a longer race.
6.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS & REGISTRATION PERIOD: The
number
of athletes
that will be accepted in the 2023 organization is set to 150.
7.
PARTICIPATION FEE: The
participation fee amount for the race is EURO 170,00
(one hundred and seventy) and
is paid via credit card during the registration process.
7.
PARTICIPATION FEE: The
participation fee amount for the race is EURO 170,00
(one hundred and seventy) and
is paid via credit card during the registration process.
8.
PROVISIONS: The
organization commits to offer to the athletes: lunch before and after
the race, food and liquids during the race, commemorative gift, medal
to the athletes that finish the race within the time limit, race
number (bib) and medical support. The transportation to the
finish area of the athletes who withdraw with vehicles of the
organization is also covered. The participation fee does not
cover overnight stay before or after the race. For their stay,
the athletes can choose among various solutions in the wider area
(hostels, hotels, camping) or in the area of Haidou, in the Forest
Village of Erymanthos, free camping. Transportation expenses of
a impaired athlete, if they come up, are paid by the athlete.
9.
CANCELLATION: Cancellation
of participation and return of 50% of the fee is accepted until
August 30th,
2023. In order for the application to cancel to be valid, it
must be sent from the email that was stated by the athlete on his
participation application.
10.
HEALTH, SAFETY AND MEDICAL CHECK OF ATHLETES: The
Organization disclaims all liability for any damage to health or
physical integrity (injury or death) of the athletes participating in
the race. It is considered obvious that each athlete that
submits a participation application is fully aware as an adult of his
intention to participate in an athletic event that takes place in a
mountain environment, usually in extreme conditions. Each
athlete has the responsibility to compete with caution and
responsibility and not put himself in objective hazardous situations.
It is also obvious that each athlete, by submitting his application
to participate, already knows based on recent medical examinations if
his health condition allows him to compete in a long distance race in
the open wild. The Organization does not require a medical
certification from the athletes, considering that the measure of
medical certifications submission is ethically questionable and
creates a false impression of responsibility of the athletes and
organizers, cultivating both ways a climate of hypocrisy.
During the race, the Organization will cater for the
medical screening of the athletes with symptoms which create
suspicion of impaired health, because of their exposure to the race
and to extreme weather conditions. If a doctor diagnoses
serious risk from further pursuing the quest of an athlete, he must
quit the race and give his race number to the station crew.
Continuation of running out of competition after the
disqualification of the athlete concerns the athlete solely, only if
the doctor decides that the athlete's mental condition has not been
disturbed. In any case, if the athlete decides to continue his
race, the organization does not accept any responsibility for his
security and support and the safety team is not obliged to follow
him.
11.
RACE BIBS DISTRIBUTION & IDENTIFICATION OF ATHLETES: The
race bibs distribution will take place the day before the race and on
the day of the race in the Main Office in the Forest Village of
Erymanthos, in the area of Haidou, where the headquarters of the race
are. Distribution times are as follows:
a) Thursday 12:00
until 22:00 & b) Friday 04:30 until 05:30.
12.
COPYRIGHT: The
Organization and its partners hold the intellectual property rights
of photographing and filming the race from authorized groups which
undertake this work. Each athlete whose application is accepted to
participate automatically accepts this condition, knowing they may
appear in photographs or videos without the required license and
without being able to claim any compensation from any publication of
the material.
13.
PERSONAL DATA: The
organization will not make known to others the personal data of
athletes who apply for participation. Respecting the relevant
legislation and considering absolute moral obligation to maintain
secrecy, it keeps the athletes' information secret in a safe digital
environment. Under publicity is only the name of the athlete, the
city of residence, age, and what he/she decides to publish (photo,
personal website and a brief personal athletic resume).
14.
RACE BIB: During
the race, each athlete who participates is required to bear the
athlete number (bib), which is the only evidence of his participation
in the race. The number should be located in a prominent position on
the front side (shirt, tights, backpack belts) to be able to prove
that he is participating in the race. Athletes not wearing the bib
number are not entitled to support in Aide Stations. In order
to honor the athletes who, participate in the race, the organization
gives as race bib number to the athlete the number of his place in
the previous race, if he had participated.
15.
EQUIPMENT: There
is obligatory equipment for the athletes that participate in
ROUT. Each athlete has the right to carry equipment as he considers
necessary to cope with the difficulties of the race. The Organization
will assist athletes with the transportation and delivery of 2 Bags
Supply (drop-bags) in 3 points of the race (more in paragraph 23 of
the present regulations).
The
obligatory equipment has as following:
1. Waterproof jacket
2.
Survival blanket
3. Headlamp + spare batteries
4. Miniature
lamp for spare use
5.
Mobile Telephone
6. Hydration pack or water bottle (choice of
athlete)
7. Lighter or matches
8. Food
(choice of athlete)
9. Medical kit (for facing traumas or other
emergencies)
10.
Whistle
11.
Liquids cup
12.
Leggings pants
In the above equipment, each athlete can add
vital medicines that may concern him (allergic shock injection etc),
as well as other objects: backpack, gaiters, spare clothes, water
cup, whistle, route book (supplied by the organization), GPS, mobile
phone, gloves, hat, long tights, electrolytes, trekking poles,
elastic band.
The organization will check the obligatory
equipment
16.
ROUTE: The
route of ROUT has a length of 174,0 kilometers and a total positive
difference (ascent) of 9000 meters approximately. In its bigger
part, the route consists of paths and path roads (almost 67%) and it
is completed with forest roads of moderate or basic foot access (32%)
and minimum asphalt kilometers (1%). The type of route is
"circle", starting and ending at the Forest Village of
Erymanthos. In summary, the course starts at the area of
Haidou, passes from Vathyrema, reaches of Prasinada, ascends the
Bardakova forest and descends to Oxia and then to Zarkadia, continues
to the ascend of Kaikouli, descends to Farasino stream, continues to
the Krousovo stream, the area of Zagradenia, Anterorahi and Alikioi,
descends the Mega Rema (or Arkoudorema) and reaches the shores of the
Artificial Lake Platanovrysi, then after reaching Zarkadia again,
then ascents to Oxia, reaching Silli and then Prasinada. From
Prasinada follows back the initial trail to Theologos and finishes
in the Forest Village of Erymanthos, in Haidou.
17.
PENALTIES: For
almost all offenses, the penalty imposed is the exclusion from the
race (disqualification). Disqualification is the penalty imposed on
any of the following offenses:
- Loss of checkpoint
-
Leaving the Station out of the time limit
- Receive support out
of the Station's limits
- Refusal to comply with the suggestions
of the organization authorized persons
- Escort en route by a
person without race bib number (pacer)
- Deliberate dumping of
rubbish on the path
- Inappropriate behavior towards staff or
league teammates
- Refusal to help teammates in need
- Use
of transport means for shortening the route (shortcutting)
-
Loss of race number (bib)
For offenses of improper / violent
behavior as well as fraudulent tactics (use of transport), the
exclusion is permanent and the athlete is not allowed to participate
in ROUT in the future.
18.
TIME LIMIT: Each
finish within the permitted time limit is valid and the athlete is
considered to have completed the race in time, if he has gone through
all the checkpoints on the route. A finish after the permitted time
limit, even for the minimum unit of time, is considered out of time.
The athletes that quit or are disqualified because of leaving out of
the time limit from one of the six stations, are registered in the
list of finishers based on the time and point of the race which they
reached but are not qualified for a finisher medal. The
time limit for the race is set to 44 hours or
02.00 on Saturday. The race starts at 06:00 morning time on
Friday.
19.
IN-BETWEEN TIME BARRIERS: The
race will have three (3) Cut-off
Points
(http://www.rout.gr/index.php?name=Content&page=racedata-rout).
The in-between time barriers are set for safety reasons of the
athletes and for the smooth operation of the race. The time of
recording, and thus possible exclusion of an athlete due to time
limit, is defined as the time of departure from the station and not
the time of arrival at the station. An athlete who returns to
the station after the time limit and after his departure from the
station means automatically withdrawal from the race
Athletes
who are excluded due to time limits, are obliged to turn in their
number to the person in charge of the Station. Athletes who
want to continue their efforts despite being excluded due to time
limit, are allowed to do so provided that:
a) they turn in their
number
b) the doctor decides that their mental health is
not impaired
c) sign a statement that they are continuing of
their own responsibility
It is pointed out that these athletes
can not have any more support from the organization, since they
continue, nor the supervision of the Safety Team, since deciding to
continue, and they are not entitled to present claims from the
organization.
20.
CANCELLATION/SUSPENSION/POSTPONEMENT OF THE RACE, CHANGE OF TIME
LIMITS: The
race may stop, temporarily or permanently, based on the Organizers'
judgment, due to extreme weather conditions at any time. Also,
the organization has the right to postpone the start of the race in
case of dangerous weather phenomena (a strong storm or intense
snowfall). In the case of a temporary stop the athletes are
obliged to halt their effort at the first station that they will
reach on their way and wait until a new direction will be given to
Aide Stations personnel for restarting the race, the time cut offs
are extended accordingly and the stop time is deducted from the total
time performance of the athletes. Also, for the same reason the
route may be modified (the route may be modified only if no athlete
has gone past the point of modification) or the cut-off time limits
may be extended, hence the time limit for finishing the race may be
extended too. Responsible for the decision postponement,
interruption or extension, is the director of the race.
21.
ROUTE MARKING: The
marking of the route is separated in informative and directional.
A)
Informative
Marking:
The informative marking consists of ascending numbered signs which
will provide specific information, such as kilometer distance,
altitude, distance from Stations and other useful information for the
athletes. The ascending number of the sign will refer to a
concise "rout-book" where more valuable information for the
athletes will be given. Also there will be informative signs at
the Stations. There will be signs every 10 kilometers marking
killing kilometers along the whole of the route, and kilometric
count-down for each one of the last 5 kilometers of the race.
B)
Directional
Marking:
Is separated in day and night marking, and it consists of either
small plastic signs with the race logo (with a direction symbol) for
the day marking, or also plastic signs, which are covered with a
light reflecting material, for use at night, that reflect the light
from the athletes' lamps.
22.
ALIMENTATION: The
Organization assumes part of the athletes' rations during the race in
all 6
Stations.
All the Stations of ROUT offer full alimentation (there is special
food for vegeterians), with regular food, snacks and electrolytic
fluids. Plates, forks etc for the "table food" are
offered by the organization, but each athlete must carry a cup or
tumbler in which the Station's volunteers will offer fluids
(electrolytes, soft drinks etc.). The athlete cannot take more
isotonic fluid than what he consumes on the spot, consequently he
will not have the right to fill a waterbag or bottles.
23.
DROP BAG: Each
athlete is entitled to deliver two (2) "supply bags" (drop
bags), which they will receive at three Stations of the ROUT:
a) Zarkadia i & ii (K-55 & 134) and b) Zagradenia (K87).
Drop-Bags are of athletes' choice (they are not supplied by the
organization to limit the use of plastic) and may contain anything an
athlete considers necessary for his/her support: clothing, footwear,
equipment and food, while their maximum weight cannot exceed 5 kilos
each and their volume cannot be larger than 50 liters. Trekking
poles will not be accepted, unless there are telescopic or foldable
and are secured in the bag of the athlete. Bags from which
sharp metal objects jut out will not be accepted for transportation.
It is recommended that athletes should avoid placing fragile objects
inside the bags because they may be damaged during their
transportation. After the end of the race the two bags will be
delivered to the athletes.
24.
EXTERNAL SUPPORT-ESCORTING: ROUT
is based on the physical and mental powers of the athletes.
External support is a limited concept and the concept of a pacer is
not acceptable, a concept that is permitted in some of the races
taking place abroad and aims to helping the athlete keep pace.
External support for the athletes is permitted
only in the zone of the two Aid Stations, where its presence is
permitted: a) Zarkadia, b) Prasinada.
Both of these stations are accessible by conventional car, as there
is an asphalt road there. Escort of an athlete by a person who
does not have a race bib number is punished with disqualification.
Escort of an athlete by close persons is permitted only at the last
kilometer of the race before the finish line.
25.
SAFETY: Each
athlete must show the required attention for maintaining his safety
and must carry with him the necessary supplies for facing an
emergency situation (bleeding, allergic shock etc.) The
organization has the responsibility to face any emergency (in the
route) or regular incident (at the stations) with the voluntary teams
of First Aid and rescuers. The doctors of the race have the
responsibility to decide to disqualify an athlete, if they feel that
the condition of his health does not allow him to continue without
risking his health. We would like to stress the use of
headlamp, since moving in the dark is a significant part of the race
for the total of the athletes (it
is estimated that even the winner of the race will move for at least
12 hours in the dark).
Each athlete must make sure that his/her headlamp is working properly
and that he has spare batteries. Faulty operation of the
headlamp may be even fatal for the athlete. Each athlete has a
moral obligation to assist other athletes who are in need or danger.
If the athlete is required to accept medical help and found that he
put himself in danger due to gross negligence of equipment use, he
will bear any costs of evacuation and the penalty is expulsion from
the current race as well as exclusion from next race too.
26.
AIDE STATIONS: The
Aide Station is the primary operational unit of the organization
during the race. There, athletes can receive medical services
and food supplies as well as external support (but only at the
Stations where allowed). At each Station the athletes that quit or
are disqualified because of time, will have the possibility to be
transported with vehicles of the organization back to the start place
of the race (Forest Village). Responsible for operation of each
station is the "station master" who is authorized to manage
the affairs in their totality, with the exception of the timing of
athletes: athlete exclusion, certain penalties, stop of the race, as
well as all decisions regarding the operation of station. There
are 6 Aide Stations in ROUT
and are as follows:
1. Prasinada-I > Κ-27
2.
Ζarkadia-I
> Κ-55
3.
Zagradenia > Κ-87
4. Anterorahi > Κ-109
5.
Zarkadia-II > Κ-134
6.
Prasinada-II > Κ-147
Each
station is also and a Checkpoint of athletes, meaning that it records
the athletes departure time from the Station or any dropouts and out
of time arrivals. The timeline of the Aid Stations is described
in the Table of Distances and Time Limits and in Article 19 of the
present regulations.
27.
CHECKPOINTS: Checkpoints
are intended only to record the athletes of the race, in order to
have a clear image of the number of the athletes moving on the
route. This contributes to the safety of the athletes and
enforces the "fair play" effect in the race. Checkpoints
are 25 in total and are ubiquitous between the Stations except 6 of
them, which are hosted at the Aid Stations sites. IMPORTANT:
No checkpoint offers any kind of food or liquids, they
offer only primary first aide to the athletes who are under an
emergency condition.
28.
SAFETY TEAM ("CLEANER"): Qualified
personnel of the organization will follow the last athlete of the
race each time, for safety reasons. This team will have the ability
to radio communicate and will carry a basic pharmacy for
emergencies.
29.
TIMING - RESULTS: The
timing is done electronically for the total (final) time and manually
for intermediate times. The final times are transferred immediately
to the website of the organization and the finalization of the
results is done within the next few days. There will be no team
score.
30.
PRIZES: There
are no monetary prizes, only commemorative prizes are given to the
winners. The Organization is opposed to the introduction of direct
cash prizes, not being able first of all to comply and also
considering as not appropriate for such an effort that puts athletes
under a test that surpasses by far the narrow limits of a race.
In detail, commemorative awards will be offered to the
following athletes:
a) 1st, 2nd & 3rd winners of the race
b)
1st, 2nd & 3rd female winners of the race
c) 1st male
winner of the M50 category (master man - 60+ years old)
d) 1st
female winner of the W50 category (master woman- 50 years old)
e)
5 stars (5 time finishers)
f)
10 stars (10 times finisher)
31.
REGULATIONS AMENDMENT: The
organization reserves the right to amend these regulations without
prior notice.
